The American idea, built on individual liberty, free enterprise, and self-government is still the most noble and inspiring experiment in human history. The promise of America has always been that if you take responsibility for your life, play by the rules, and work hard that anything is possible. For far too many in our society, that promise has felt more distant than ever. Today, over half of all Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and feeling less secure than ever before about their future. Our factory workers have seen their jobs shipped overseas and paychecks diminished, while China has lifted over 500 million of its own people into the middle class. Meanwhile, those in Washington seem to play by a different set of rules, completely losing touch with the very people they were sent to represent.
Everywhere we look in our society, we see massive challenges that are getting worse, not better. As a result, we are angrier, more divided, and more fearful for our future than ever before. This is not the America that I grew up in, and it is not the America that I intend to pass on to my children.
We need policies that are going to prioritize our people and our American future.
I believe that we can recapture the greatness and awe-inspiring nature of America, but we need to start focusing on the really big challenges that are holding us back as a state and a nation. We need policies that are going to prioritize our people and our American future. We do that by investing in our children and our workers, thus ensuring that all Americans have a chance at an education that gives them the tools to succeed in the 21st century economy. We must reform our healthcare system to make sure that one bad diagnosis is not an economic death sentence for a young family. We must implement a clear-eyed strategy to combat Chinese economic aggression to ensure that the values that have kept the world safe and our nation prosperous continue to define the world.
These are just a few of the opportunities before us. I believe that with an honest perspective about our present, a clear-eyed vision for of our future, and the resolve to get the job done no matter the obstacles, we can recapture our American greatness, and inspire a new generation of Americans to lead us into the 21st century.
I hope you will join me in that pursuit.
